Pitch It: 5 of The Best Places to Camp in Mexico

We’re sure you’ll agree, oftentimes the word “summer” is directly and immediately correlated to one of any nature-loving boho chick’s favoritest things: camping. There is something so magical about waking up in your tent beside the ocean, on top of a mountain or in the midst of a forest. It’s an opportunity to really disconnect and re-familiarize yourself with your love of nature, the peacefulness and serenity of nature sounds and really ultimately realizing how nice it is to be away from the hustle and bustle.

As adventure lovers, we live for exploring and finding new places to settle and pitch our tents around the world. Lately, we’ve been looking at some of the best places to camp in Mexico for a camping trip, and here’s what we found:

  1. Las Estacas Parque Natural

Near Mexico City, you can find one of the most beautiful national parks in the country that is handsdown one of the best places to camp in Mexico. A natural river known for its stunning crystalline waters and gentle currents is just one of the main attractions that draws campers to this site. Plus, enjoy all kinds of other activities like snorkeling, diving, kayaking, and even experience an ancient pre-Hispanic sweat ceremony called Temazcal.

2. Mayto Beach, Jalisco

Mayto is a paradise located about 2 hours south of popular tourist destination and home to the Erica Maree studio, Puerto Vallarta. However, Mayto has very little commercial development and is truly one of the most spectacular beaches in Mexico. 5 minutes away you’ll also find a tiny little fishing village called Tehuamixtle – perfect for a day trip adventure during your stay on the beach.

  1. Playa Boca de Iguanas, La Huerta, Jalisco

Boca Beach Camping & Trailer park is a family-owned camping spot with over 30 years of experience. The great thing about Boca Beach is that they are extremely focused on the conservation of the environment, and encourage environmental education.

  1. Playa Salamando Campground, Ensenada, Mexico

The great thing about Playa Salamando, is that you can reserve your private campsite on the beach, or on the cliffs above. Every site has an ocean view, and the entire property is gated and fenced with employees on duty around the clock, so security is never an issue. This site in Ensenada is a great spot to relax as a family or in a group.

  1. Malikualli, Malinalco, Mexico

Just two and a half hours away from Mexico City, you’ll find a neat ecotourism complex with a great camping area and everything you’ll need for a cozy camping trip, which makes it one of the coolest places to camp in Mexico. The cool thing about this site is that it also has a 200-meter zip line, plus rappelling, rock climbing, horseback riding and paragliding. Oh, and there’s an archeological zone too. Depending on the season you’re headed here, it can get a little busy and sometimes it gets cold – be sure to do your research on seasonal temperatures so you know exactly what to bring with you.

Like always, it’s important to do lots of research before heading out on any adventure. However this is even more important to do when it’s a camping trip. There are lots of communal campgrounds where you can rent your own private site and take advantage of available amenities, but sometimes it’s also fun to just find a spot somewhere out there in the wilderness. This is all fine and dandy as long as you’re properly prepared.

Taking a first-aid kit, enough food and water, proper shoes, enough warmth, and being sure your tent is complete are just some of the things that should be check off your list before heading out to bushwhack it. Check out this super awesome camping checklist here.

It’s also important to make sure your bags are durable, and during the summertime it’s important to protect our faces from sun. The best way to do this is with a hat! Our Erica Maree oilcloth bags and backpacks are perfect for camping because of their durability and water resistance. We also have trendy trucker hats, and some super fun and comfortable tees that are more than appropriate for the occasion.

Here at the Erica Maree studio, which doubles as a bohemian fashion and accessory shop in beautiful Puerto Vallarta, we believe in the value of supporting artisans whose handicrafts have been passed down for generations. Each one of our pieces is created by hand with heart and soul, and provides fair labor wages for artisans in order to keep the magic of traditional Mexican hand embroidery alive.

As always, thanks for shopping handmade!
